< Return to Interwrite Makeover Video Contest Low Tech Life
Our video parodies two songs from the musical Annie: It's a Hard Knock Life and Tomorrow. We are a classroom that LOVES technology, though the technology in our classroom doesn't always love us back. You can see several samples of student produced technology products in the background (graphs, slideshows, computer generated drawings, a class movie showing on the teacher laptop, etc.) Of course they are a little hard to see since they are in black and white and very small. Since so many of us are familiar with the problems faced when living a low tech life, we made a karaoke version of our video. Be sure to sing along as you watch. Hopefully our dreams of a technology filled tomorrow will come true. Enjoy our video, our class, and don't forget to vote!

GREAT JOB!!! YOUR STUDENTS ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE YOU!

LeeAnne commented 10/21/2007

Super Fantastic! It was so entertaining and made you want to jump up and sing with them. I really hope you win! Best of luck!

krose commented 10/21/2007

I take that as a huge compliment ajimenez because the technology that you see the students point out in the video is the technology we have. While we don't have much, we work extremely hard to maximize what we have. There are some neat effects in the video. That is from a self purchased, less than perfect, 2004 video software package that I have on my 2003 home computer. I have no background in technology. I have however spent a lot of time trying to learn how to use technology effectively, and I search high and low to find free software programs and resources from the public domain to make the videos look and sound better. The closest I have ever come to any of the technology offered in this contest is the vendors area at conferences.
Trying to explain to the students what some of the technology this contest was offering was hilarious. The cricket scene was inspired from that conversation. Even if they haven't been exposed to some types of technology, their learning curve is extremely sharp and they are extremely eager to learn how to use it. Some came into the room at the beginning of the year not knowing where the shift key was. Now not only are they all developing a command of the basic Microsoft programs, they write their own scripts, film their own videos, design their own backgrounds, search and evaluate information, and communicate with people around the globe. While we could certainly do a lot more things with more technology, I don't believe that just because you don't have a lot of technology, doesn't mean you can't search around, find available resources, get creative, and put in a lot of hard work and effort.

vidman commented 10/21/2007

Wonderful mix of music, kids and creativity without being overdone. Congrats!

MrColosi commented 10/21/2007

Saw this video a few weeks ago and thought it was very impressive. Curious -- what software did you use to edit Ms. Rose?

tip commented 10/21/2007

GREAT JOB GUYS GOD BLESS YOU GUYS

krose commented 10/21/2007

Thanks MrColosi! I used vegas for editing and audacity to clean up the sound. Vegas is a big memory hog, especially on an pc that is not designed for that kind of thing. I don't have enough memory for the preview to work right on the effects parts, so I never really know exactly what it is going to look like until after it renders.

Melissacard commented 11/10/2007

The smallest district in the competition and yet the third highest vote total out of 15 entries. This is a great tribute to these kids and the community. Although we won't come in first place in the voting, it's a great showing that should count for something. There's still 70% of the score to be judged and Ms. Rose and her class have shown us they are the true winners!

lsmith52 commented 11/10/2007

What an outstanding presentation! I absolutely love it and so did my homeroom class at Tate (The Touch). Good luck in the final judging. We're pulling for you.

lynne872 commented 11/10/2007

We're so proud of you and all you accomplished with this video. We really appreciated your straighforward style and light touch. Best of luck!

teachk766 commented 11/10/2007

Amazing! The third highest vote total in the contest. You would have won in 6-8 or 9-12. What's up with all the votes in this age group? This is the one regardless of the popular vote total.

turningstone commented 11/10/2007

My opinion on the popularity of K-5 in this contest? I feel that in most districts when it comes to technology K-5's are pretty much the red-headed stepchildren so to speak. It seems that high schools and junior high schools get most of the new technology BEFORE any elementary school. I think everyone just wants to take advantage of this great opportunity.

belly commented 11/10/2007

Back at ya from ENGC Houston

dmspeigle commented 11/10/2007

FYI - Melissa Ridge was not the smallest US school in the K-5 competition with 500 students. The smallest US school was the 2nd place video with only 434 students and a city size of only 1537 people. They got more votes than they have citizens. Check "www.publicschoolreview.com" if you want to see unbiased stats on all of the schools. There are interesting facts on economic status and distric expenditures per student.

nasaman commented 11/10/2007

To dmspeigle:
FYI- No one said anything about the smallest school. If you read the posts it says the smallest DISTRICT. The second place video was from a small shooland small town, no doubt about it, but the post states that the DISTRICT is 13,793 according to greatschools.net. There are interesting stats on many sites about economic differences and I do hope people will take time to check those out. Thanks for playing though!

pioneer1303 commented 11/10/2007

Keep up the great work

Tami McNeese

dmspeigle commented 11/10/2007

Not all cities are afforded the luxury of having its own school district. 13,793 students are divided among the whole county and 28 schools covering over 514 square miles. Anyway, all of the students did a great job. FYI - Both Melissa and Hildebran did statistically a better job in getting votes than the overall vote winner (2169 votes for a city size of 24,838). Its all in the hands of the judges now.

nasaman commented 11/10/2007

dm speigle:
I agree with you completely on that point! ;) I enjoyed your kids sense of humor immensely. Best of luck...after us of course;)

stanklim commented 11/10/2007

It is too bad "adults" are being bad examples for their children and students. It was a real honor to be one of the top five finalist in each of the categories. Each school should be very proud of that accomplishment. Please don't ruin that for any of the schools. The judges will now decide which is best for their vision of what they wanted. Great call on Interwrite's part.

turningstone commented 11/10/2007

agreed...100% I don't ever recall district size having anything to do with the contest. I also don't ever recall that the grand prize should be awarded to the school with the most "need." These factors are completely very irrelevant...

nasaman commented 11/10/2007

Stanklim:
Sorry, I don't see your point. I'm sure everyone is proud of their accomplishments. It's a friendly discussion of facts as far as I can see. Thanks for playing!

nasaman commented 11/10/2007

Turningstone:
A statement was made on this page and a statement was answered. I don't see anyone saying it was part of the contest. Jus discussion. Thanks.

teacherforever9 commented 11/10/2007

When looking at the contest coverage on the Interwrite Learning site, didn't one of the schools have some time/coverage on one or more of the Dallas radio/tv stations? Dallas and the surrounding areas have a huge population.

krose commented 11/11/2007

Yes we were, and it was a huge accomplishment and a complete thrill. To have a camera crew and reporters come out was amazing. All the elementary finalists had significant coverage. That is a tribute to how wonderful they all are. (And let's admit, elementary kids are just so CUTE when they sing!)
I'm not quite sure why my video, my students, and my community are suddenly being questioned in our own comment area for being proud of who they are, where they are from, and what they accomplished. Population size, district need, and media coverage have nothing to do with the judging criteria. The judging criteria is clearly outlined in the contest rules and doesn't need to be debated here. I don't mind having it pointed out that there was a smaller school. But the fact that someone would say that people in our community are setting a bad example because we pointed out to our own kids that even though they didn't come in first, they still did a great job, or implying to third graders that they should have gotten more votes because they were on tv seems a bit unnecessary.
They worked very hard for the votes they got, and 1434 is an absolutely incredible number. This contest has been a wonderful experience and clearly every school is very deserving. It is easy to see why the communities are so strongly behind these kids!

MrColosi commented 11/11/2007

Mrs. Rose and Melissa Ridge Elementary,

I just wanted to write you quick to say that it's a pleasure and an honor to compete against your school! My class and I really enjoyed your video and thought it was a lot of fun. Canandaigua, NY wishes you the best of luck in the future!

nachomomma commented 11/12/2007

Mr Colosi and Ms. Rose,

Perhaps your classes could become pen pals and share and learn from one another - it would be a wonderful lesson in geography and friendship. You both seem like wonderful teachers with great passion for your work and your children. Thank you both for all that you do.
